Losang Nyima is the first in his family to attend school and his educational journey marks the vital import of mother-tongue bilingual education for rural Tibetan children and the impact of access to global education.

On 20 July, 2024, we welcomed participants from around the world to a virtual Machik Kora to learn about Designing for Tibet, a presentation by Losang Nyima. We had the chance to mark and celebrate Losang Nyima's remarkable journey from attending Machik's Chungba Primary and Middle Schools to achieving top honors as an MA graduate from the Pratt Institute. Attendees were able to his passion and vision for Tibetan design as he shared his project about the impending identity crisis faced by traditional Tibetan domestic homes. He advocated for an alternative approach to Tibetan home reconstruction and preservation, proposing a model that could potentially serve as a prototype for other regions. His study highlighted the importance of Tibetan interior elements, emphasizing the unique cultural identity inherent in Tibetan people and their living spaces. By doing so, the project offered a nuanced strategy for navigating the challenges of modernization while honoring historical heritage. In an animated discussion session, we were joined by other Tibetan designers and by David Foley, Losang Nyima’s professor and mentor from Pratt Institute, who emphasized the importance of responsibility that comes with education.
