Dear Friend,
Since the nascent rise of the Covid-19 pandemic early this year, people and communities around the globe have been caught in waves of disorientation and uncertainty. On March 24, when all of India went into complete lock-down - with 1.3 billion people given less than four hours' notice - we were even more acutely aware of just how bewildered people were feeling, including the great majority of the Tibetan community in exile.
These are unprecedented times, and we’re clearly navigating uncharted waters. But here's one thing we know for sure: being connected to each other, as a global community, matters now more than ever.
With this in mind, we have launched 'Machik Kora' -- an interactive online initiative that we hope will open new doors of communication to and across the global Machik community.
At the heart of Machik Kora is a monthly virtual meetup that will serve as a platform for regular communication to all members of the Machik global community. Our weekly discussions – to be held every Wednesday – will provide an opportunity to share insights, experiences and ideas for strengthening and supporting local communities. Each Machik Kora will also feature dynamic voices from the Tibetan community who are on the frontline of healthcare and community work in this time of crisis.
To be inclusive across the Machik global community, the Kora meetups are held at varying times – 8pm EST (primarily in English), and sometimes 8pm IST (primarily in Tibetan). As you know, to do a kora (སྐོར་བ་ a circumambulation, circling a sacred site on foot) is a time-honored spiritual practice for Tibetans – one that we all feel a connection to and that keeps our feet grounded as we seek to reconnect with our best aspirations and intentions.
Doing a kora is especially a practice that is a vital part of the daily lives of countless Tibetan elders — a precious generation that is so very vulnerable today, and a living link to our collective past. Though today's crisis brings forth unparalleled challenges to our world, we hope that Kora can serve as a buffer for community organizing and generate collective healing and well-being beyond the pandemic.
Wishing you peace today, and looking forward to reconnecting in the uncertain weeks and months that lie ahead.
In spirit✨
